Reading 242 of 308 | Day 285

Season of Promise

Theme: Hope, vision, the world to come

22. When Practice Feels Empty

The Rituals

(242) There will be days — perhaps many days — when the practice feels mechanical. When the Daily Reading is just words. When the check-in is just a signature. When the Reflection is just routine.

This is normal. This is not failure. This is what practice looks like most of the time.

The monk who has meditated for forty years will tell you: most mornings, the meditation is nothing special. Most mornings, the mind wanders, the body aches, the silence is just silence. But you sit anyway. Because the practice is not about the feeling. The practice is about the showing up.

And then — once in a great while, unannounced and unearned — the passage blazes with meaning. The Reflection writes itself in a rush of clarity. The Dialogue opens a door you didn't know was there. And in that moment, you understand why you showed up on all the empty days. Because this moment could not have found you if you hadn't been here, faithfully, routinely, on all the days when nothing seemed to happen.
