The Tenets

(143) Hold your beliefs. Hold them passionately. But hold them in open hands, not clenched fists. A belief held in an open hand can be examined, tested, revised, and deepened. A belief held in a clenched fist can only be defended — and the defense, eventually, becomes the belief's prison.
